eBook Reading Software EBooks come in many different formats, and each format has different requirements of the software. The main formats are plain text, HTML, Microsoft Reader, PDF, Mobipocket, PalmReader, Gemstar eBook, and a few others. The problem is, which format to choose -- after all, you don't want to be stuck with a format you can't use. Many of the best and most customer focused publishers make their eBooks available in multiple formats, but there are still plenty of publishers who only publish in one or two formats (usually Microsoft Reader and PDF). If you buy from a bookstore like Fictionwise or eBookAd, who provide books in several formats, you can redownload your books as many times you like in whichever formats you like. Fictionwise, in particular, will add new formats as they come along, so you should never be in the position of not being able to read your purchased books in one form or another. If you have a choice, I would recommend Mobipocket first, because the software is available for such a wide range of platforms (PC, PalmOS, WindowsCE, PocketPC, Franklin, Symbian and Nokia, but not yet on MAC or Linux) and it is quite easy to convert your own content. Palm Reader is available for PC, MAC, PalmOS and PocketPC). Microsoft Reader is available for PC, Tablet PC and PocketPC. Adobe eBook Reader is available for PC and MAC, but the versions for PalmOS and PocketPC aren't great -- there are better alternatives. There are a few good readers for reading electronic texts from sites like the Gutenberg Project, which are presented in plain text. I will be dealing with this topic in more detail soon.
